Little Things

My son got married last weekend. Besides the joy of celebrating his new family, I came away with many examples of grace transforming ordinary moments into extraordinary mementos. This picture is one of them. It came about through a series of unexpected interactions with family and friends, old and new. A mix up in nail polish top coat allowed time for a quick run to look for lucky bamboo. A pre-teen’s enthusiasm encouraged me to buy the bigger plant with the sprouting heart as a decoration for the grooms dinner. A dear friend hanging out with me and my newborn grandson after the dinner forgot to take the bamboo with her, leaving it on the dresser next to a small gift picked up for an especially helpful sister. A photo test to see how the accent wall might work as a backdrop for wedding shots the next day led to me perch this wise bird at the crook of the sprouting heart. And there it was –  the reminder that in being a life-long soulmate, parent, child, sibling, extended family, friend or acquaintance, it’s the little things that build up or wear away respect, tenderness, and connection in relationships. Pausing to notice the grace-filled intersections of the ordinary and extraordinary is my way of  praising God for the little things that come together in one huge thing — love!
