I am blessed by a life filled with sisters (and brothers too). My appreciation of this gift deepened at our annual family reunion. In going through a box of old photos I came a picture of my mother with her two sisters. They were full of fun and caring for each other and their families no matter the year or occasion. My sisters and I enjoy the same kind of relationship, in part because it was modeled for us so well.
Both of these aunts died this past year, making their absence at the reunion bittersweet. They both lived into their 90’s and were interacting with family until the end. In looking at the picture of the three women, one of the few I have that is not a posed shot along with their brothers, I felt a new sense of responsibility to carry on their legacy of love and laughter. Would my nieces and nephews look at a picture of me with my sisters and think of fun and caring? Do I let others capture the spontaneous moments where the true nature of relationships are revealed?
