19th century ice house provided a cool respite in northern Virginia until the early 20th century
Ice in a summer drink seems like such a simple thing. Reach into the freezer and pop a few cubes into your glass. Like many things that are common place in the 21st century, a chilled beverage hasn’t always been that easy. For example, in the 19th century you had to harvest blocks of solid water from a frozen river or lake mid-winter if you hoped to have an ice-cooled drink mid-summer. And that was only the first of many steps necessary for creating ice chips in June. What other ‘ordinary’ or deceptively simple parts of life do you take for granted?
